In July 2008 Ghent University launched the Basileus project, which is the Erasmus Mundus External Cooperation Window (EMECW) project for the Western Balkans.
The European Commission awarded several million € to fund mobility scholarships between the EU and the Western Balkans.
A number of scholarships for Master and Post-Doctorate students are reserved for Western Balkan universities who are not a partner in the project.
The mobility opportunities are limited to the 8 EU universities who are a partner in the Basileus project: Ghent University, University of Nice Sophia Antipolis, Lund University, University of Roma La Sapienza, University of Ljubljana, Sofia St.
Kliment Ohridski University, University of Zagreb and University of Heidelberg.
We would like to invite your university to promote this opportunity among your Master and PhD students (post-doctorate candidates must have obtained their PhD in the last 2 years). We enclose a leaflet and poster which can be used to disseminate information.
Interested students can apply as „Target Group 2″ online on www.basileus.ugent.be from 2 February until 15 March 2009. Depending on the number of applications, more deadlines could follow for next academic year. Selected candidates can start their mobility period from August 2009 onwards and before 1 April 2010.
Master students can apply for 6 months or 10 months as an exchange student during their studies – or they can apply for a full degree Master of 1 or 2 years after obtaining a Bachelor or Master degree. A post-doctorate candidate can apply for a scholarship of 10 months.
If students from your university are selected for an exchange, the Basileus consortium will conclude an agreement with your university in order to ensure academic recognition for those students going abroad.
We would also like to draw your attention to the fact that a number of scholarships are reserved for a special category called Target Group 3: Western Balkan nationals who are in a particularly vulnerable situation due to political or economical reasons or because of physical disabilities: eg. refugee status, asylum beneficiaries, indigenous population or IDP.
These students can apply for exchange as a Bachelor student (6 or 10 months) or as a Master student (6 or 10 months) or for a full degree as Master for 1 or 2 years.
